Promotion Playoff : Rolleston Red 2-1 Winshill FC Gold

An unexpected fixture to finish off the season but rules are rules and the BJFL state that a play-off takes place to ascertain who gains promotion to the top division rather than use goal difference.

Shobnall was extremely quiet leading up to this 10:15 kick-off but the atmosphere changed as the teams began this play-off.

Once again the Shobnall wind would play a major part in this game as it blew the length of the pitch with Rolleston having the advantage in the first half.

It was the Reds who had the first chance of the game as a pass from Matt Webster flew across the Winshill area with Conor Frankland arriving late but his shot went wide.

From a Rolleston Red corner, the ball was only half cleared with Dom Hickman picking up the ball before flashing a shot towards goal but it was rising all the time and cleared the bar.

Winshill played the ball quickly to try and develop the play and from three consecutive quality corners they applied pressure but the defence of Dom Hickman, Lee Johnson and George Thomson along with the midfield ensured Ollie Jones was protected in the Rolleston goal.

When Rolleston played in the Winshill half they looked impressive. Joe Wilson kept his marker very busy and applied pressure to the Winshill defence when he didn't have the ball and was an example to all the players.

Ollie Jones had very little to do in the first twenty minutes partly due to the conditions but mainly because of the midfield of Reece Atton, Conor Frankland and Dan Featherstone who closed down and helped the defence when required.

The pressure of wave after wave of Rolleston attack finally broke the deadlock five minutes before the half-time whistle. The impressive Dom Hickman won the ball in defence with a fine block tackle before playing it to Liam Oakley. He in turn drove forward, playing in Matt Webster down the left. The ball was floated into the danger zone and when two defenders misjudged the flight because of a fine run by Joe Wilson, it was the busy Conor Frankland who slotted home.

Rolleston should have increased their lead from two corners but were unlucky to have shots blocked.

Half-time 1-0.

Winshilll made full use of the wind in the second half, especially from the hands of their 'keeper. However, Liam Oakley, Dom Hickman and the captain Lee Johnson dealt with the danger and played the ball away.

Out on the left Dan Wildman was making his presence known with some good link up play with Liam Oakley. He ran at the defender at every opportunity winning throw-ins and corners putting the Winshill goal under pressure.

Conor Frankland and Joe Wilson linked well up front and when Ben Cuthbert got involved the chance was lost as the ball flashed wide.

The manager kept rotating players as he sensed some were tiring due to their work rate with fifteen minutes remaining.

The Winshilll goal came after a punt up field from their 'keeper. The ball was allowed to bounce and as it hit the Rolleston defender, the referee indicated that it was handball inside the box and pointed to the penalty spot.

Ollie Jones made the decision to dive to his right as the Winshill player addressed the ball but the pace of the shot beat him to equalise.

The atmosphere was electric for the final ten minutes as the game ebbed and flowed with both teams having chances.

The Rolleston midfield of Dan Featherstone, Dan Stringer and Dan Wildman were all working to stop any Winshill attacks and when the ball was won by Liam Oakley just inside his half he played in Dan Wildman who took on his marker before playing a quality pass inside the defender for Matt Webster to run on to. He checked his run and played a left-foot pass into the heart of the Winshill defence where Joe Wilson reacted quickest and lifted the ball over the defender before hitting his shot towards goal and as the 'keeper was slow to react, the ball fell from his hands and rolled into the net.

The Rolleston players were elated and mobbed Joe to help him celebrate.

Winshill knew that time was running away from them and tried pushing forward but as the ball was cleared form their right, Dan Wildman rose to head the ball back into the danger zone. Reece Atton and Dan Feathersone were also working hard to stem the Winshill flow and with Rolleston flooding forward for another attack, the referee blew the whistle for full time.

Both the Rolleston players and the spectators were ecstatic as the realisation set in that the Reds had won promotion to the First Division.

This was a fine all round performance from all thirteen players and they should all be proud to be a part of this winning squad.

So our manager Glen Johnson bows on a high after winning promotion. He was clearly relieved and content with the result. On behalf of all the players, parents and spectators I would like to thank him for his continued enthusiasm, efforts and energy throughout this long and hard stop-start season.

Scorers:

  • Conor Frankland - 1

Man of the Match: a fine all-round team effort to end the season on a high!

15th March 2008

Rolleston Red 0-0 David Hunt Soccer School Red

The last game of the Red’s season started brightly when Rolleston pressed from the start and were rewarded with a corner within five minutes.

The game ebbed and flowed and when Conor Frankland ran with the ball at pace down the right wing his resulting cross fell to Matt Webster whose shot was saved.

Two further Rolleston corners saw Reece Atton rise and head the ball towards goal but the ‘keeper saved well.

At the other end, Oliver Jones was called upon to pull off a fine save from a David Hunt corner. From his clearance Dan Stringer controlled the ball. He ran through the midfield and released a great effort which was only parried by the ‘keeper but no Rolleston players were following up.

Rolleston put some fine passing together and from a George Thomson cross the defence had trouble clearing the ball.

Out on the left Dan Wildman took a throw to Joe Wilson whose shot just whistled wide of the upright.

A further Dan Wildman throw on twenty minutes fell to Joe Wilson who squared the ball to Ben Cuthbert. He went through one on one with the ‘keeper but pushed the ball wide.

Dan Featherstone picked up the ball from a David Hunt corner and played in Reece Atton and Joe Wilson. Joe played an intelligent ball to Conor Frankland who battled well, driving forward. A fine effort flew wide right.

The Rolleston defence of Lee Johnson, Liam Oakley, George Thomson and the impressive Dom Hickman were in control as the referee blew his whistle to end the first period of play.

Half-time 0–0.

The attacking force of Dan Stringer, Ben Cuthbert and Matt Webster continued to press as the second half progressed but they were all unlucky not to register a goal.

Every time Dom Hickman had the ball he played it intelligently through midfield. Joe Wilson picked up the ball and played it to Dan Featherstone who in turn played it on to Dan Stringer. His shot resulted in yet another Rolleston corner as the ‘keeper turned the ball around the post.

Rolleston kept on pressing with efforts from Dan Featherstone, Joe Wilson, Ben Cuthbert and Dan Wildman as the game rolled on but they still could not break the deadlock.

With only minutes remaining Dom Hickman received the ball from Lee Johnson. He drove forward and let rip with a fantastic effort that appeared to be heading for the top corner but the ball kept rising and just cleared the bar.

The final whistle of the final game of the season saw the Rolleston players visibly disappointed but they should take heart after finishing second in the table. This should ensure promotion to the top division next season.

Man of the Match: Dom Hickman – a fine performance, leading by example throughout the game.

This was the final game for Glen Johnson as manager and we should all pay tribute to him for his hard work and commitment over the years. On behalf of everyone involved with the Reds I wish him all the very best and thank him for his enthusiasm, dedication and energy whilst in charge of the Reds. He can now concentrate on his beloved Blues - although at the time of writing they appear to be heading in the wrong direction in the Premiership!

The Reds were all invited to spend the afternoon at the Fire Station as an end of season treat and appeared to enjoy being Firefighters for the duration. They all dressed up as trainee Firefighters before demolishing a car by cutting it to pieces. They went on to search in a very dark building for live casualties, using breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera. The Brontosaurus Aerial was brought to life by some of the players and the afternoon was topped off with some fine homemade chocolate brownies, courtesy of Gill Wildman.

08th March 2008

Rolleston Red 0 - 1 Mayfield Panthers Black

I don't believe the Met Office predicted a wind so fierce that it had total control over this early kick-off.

Both teams made the best of the arctic conditions as the ball was played on the ground as often as possible because when the ball was in the air it was at the mercy of the wind.

The Rolleston defence of Lee Johnson, Dom Hickman and Liam Oakley kept the attackers at bay and Ollie Jones was on form to sweep up any loose balls.

Joe Wilson and Matt Webster up front were keeping the Mayfield defence busy with the help of Reece Atton, Dan Wildman, Conor Frankland, Dan Featherstone and Dan Stringer in midfield.

The only goal of the game arrived after a corner was only half cleared. The Mayfield midfielder controlled the ball before taking on two defenders and unleashing a low drive that nestled into the net.

Half-time 0-1.

Rolleston started well in the opening minutes of the second half attacking at every opportunity.

The wind appeared to be increasing as the game continued and this made playing football very difficult.

From a Mayfield attack, Dom Hickman blocked a shot on the edge of the box.

Dan Wildman threw the ball in on the left to Matt Webster who was just about to pull the trigger when the defender fouled him on the angle of the Mayfield penalty area.

Dan Featherstone was once again making a positive impact in the midfield as he gave no time for his opponent to settle on the ball.

On the right, Conor escaped the clutches of the defender before letting rip with a fine effort that the 'keeper just managed to hold.

When the ball fell to Dom Hickman twenty yards out his resulting shot was heading for the corner, with Dan Wildman following up but the 'keeper kept hold of the ball.

Once again the wind appeared to be increasing but Rolleston battled on. Joe Wilson out on the right linked well with Reece Atton and his cross to Dan Wildman was played into Reece Atton once more. The shot was blocked but Joe Wilson followed up but again the 'keeper parried the shot.

Matt Webster was working hard both in attack and defending well and after he chased down a defender, the ball was crossed to Conor Frankland. He powered the ball towards goal but once again the 'keeper saved well.

The Rolleston defenders were coping well with any Mayfield attack with Liam Oakley showing good composure on the ball.

With only minutes remaining the ball flew out to the right and Conor Frankland ran at the defender before crossing the ball where Matt Webster wrapped his foot around the ball but again the 'keeper held on to the ball.

Once the referee blew the final whistle it was clear to see the disappointment of the Rolleston players who have seen their lead at the top of the table diminish over the last month. With only one game remaining the Reds can still gain promotion to the top division with a win to end the season well.

Man of the Match: Matt Webster - Great work rate both up front and defending when called upon.

23rd February 2008

Rolleston Red 2 - 3 Winshill Gold

Some say that a game is won and lost on the referee's decisions and that certainly was the case today when a weakened Rolleston Red - missing three players - took on Winshill Gold.

The preparation for this fixture was frustrated due to the late arrival of some players because of traffic problems near Tutbury.

After three minutes Rolleston won their first corner which the Winshill 'keeper managed to hold on to.

On five minutes a tackle in the middle of the park resulted in a Rolleston player being sent off when the general consensus was that a yellow card would have been sufficient

Winshill opened the scoring after fourteen minutes but Rolleston battled on and were rewarded after seventeen minutes when Dan Wildman played a through ball to Ben Cuthbert whose cross was met by Matt Webster who slotted the ball home.

Winshill made the most of their man advantage and on twenty minutes the attacker ran through the Rolleston defence only to shoot wide.

The Rolleston midfield found it hard going with a man down but when Joe Wilson found himself just outside the area he had one thing on his mind and unleashed a thunderbolt with the 'keeper only a spectator as it hit the back of the net.

Liam Oakley looked composed at the back and could have scored shortly before half time but the shot flew wide.

On the right it was from a Dan Wildman throw that Matt Webster let rip a fine effort that went close.

Conor Frankland was busying himself up front and from some fine play his overhead kick was a good effort that flew wide.

Half- time 2-1

Rolleston were under pressure right from the start of the second period but the defence of Lee Johnson, Dan Wildman and the very impressive Liam Oakley competed well.

Winshill continued to push with Conor Frankland and Reece Atton working hard in midfield and along with Dan Wildman played the ball out of defence from a Winshill corner.

Ollie Jones in goal had to be on his mettle as Winshill flooded forward with the aid of the extra player and the wind.

Rolleston continued to soak up the onslaught and when Ben Cuthbert was put through the ball was travelling too fast for him to reach it and it ended up in the 'keepers hands.

From a Winshill corner Joe Wilson cleared the ball to Matt Webster who ran with the ball to ease the pressure.

Winshill pushed for a goal and would have got it but for a Dan Wildman clearance off the line.

The Winshill midfield was taking pot shots at will as the Rolleston midfield tired. The equaliser arrived after the Winshill attacker reacted first to a Rolleston goal kick when he picked up the ball and drove it into the back of the net.

Two quick corners for Winshill ensured Rolleston were under even more pressure and with five minutes remaining Winshill took the lead after a shot from the edge of the box.

With only a couple of minutes to go Rolleston had two attacking opportunities but didn't capitalise on the chances.

Ollie Jones cleared the ball to the midfield and when Ben Cuthbert ran on to the ball his shot was just wide.

The Rolleston players should be congratulated on their efforts, especially after the removal of a player after only five minutes.

Scorers:

  • Matt Webster (1)

Man of the Match: Liam Oakley - a fine defensive display driving forward with the ball at every opportunity.

02nd February 2008

Newhall FC Lions 2-1 Rolleston Red

A very early start on a snow covered pitch twelve. It was touch and go whether the game was playable but after consultation with the referee we kicked off on time.

Today was a day when skill was at a premium as the difficult conditions dictated the flow of the game.

Rolleston started brightly with Conor Frankland making it difficult for the Newhall left back as he ran at him at every opportunity.

Out on the left it was Dan Wildman who linked well with Matt Webster and Joe Wilson, with Conor Frankland getting involved and releasing a fine effort that flew wide.

After fifteen minutes the Newhall 'keeper cleared the ball long which skidded off the icy pitch, wrong footing the Rolleston defence. The Newhall attacker ran on to the ball and slotted home to open the scoring.

Newhall were growing in confidence after their early goal but and after two quick corners the ball fell to Dan Wildman on the edge of the area. He looked up and ran hard with the ball before playing a precision pass between two defenders for Matt Webster to latch on to and he confidently placed the ball low to the 'keepers left to equalise.

The Rolleston defence of Dom Hickman, Lee Johnson and the very competitive Dan Featherstone were working hard to subdue the Newhall attackers who flooded forward at every opportunity.

When Rolleston had the ball they also showed glimpses of quality with Dan Wildman making the most of the throw-ins on the left. It was from one of these throws that Joe Wilson cleverly flicked the ball on to Conor Frankland who lost his marker before unleashing a fine effort that flew wide of the left upright.

Dan Featherstone was linking well with Conor Frankland on the right and when Reece Atton was introduced in to the fray after twenty minutes he made his presence known immediately with a fine through pass to Ben Cuthbert. However, Ben had strayed offside and the move came to an end.

Rolleston were caught offside time and again and this stopped the flow of the game when the front-runners only had to check their runs and look along the line.

Half-time 1-1.

Newhall started the second half with intent and after five minutes scored their second goal when the ball was cruelly deflected off a Rolleston defender, wrong footing Ollie Jones in goal.

This lifted Newhall and they clearly wanted the win more than Rolleston whose midfield seemed to go walkabout and this made it difficult for the Rolleston defenders.

Dan Featherstone was leading by example with a positive approach, along with Dom Hickman and Liam Oakley across the back.

Conor Frankland continued to press forward and terrorise the defender but all too often Rolleston strayed offside.

Rolleston pressed forward to try and equalise but good efforts from Dan Stringer, Joe Wilson and Conor Frankland came to nothing and Newhall were determined to inflict a first league defeat on the Reds.

Ben Cuthbert linked well with Joe Wilson and Reece Atton for a fine move but the resulting low drive just missed the left-hand upright.

The game was stopped by the referee far too often - as the Newhall players appeared injured - instead of letting the game flow and blowing only when the ball went out of play.

The manager was very disappointed with the overall display from the team today and the boys should take note that the season is far from over and they need to get back to winning ways to secure the Championship and promotion.

Scorer: Matt Webster - 1

Man of the Match: Dan Featherstone - showed full commitment throughout the game and played some fine through balls to the forwards.

26th January 2008

**Cup** Rolleston Red 0 - 3 Whittington FC Dragons

This was the first game since 5th January as Shobnall had finally started to dry out with the help of the fierce wind that had been blowing since Friday.

Both teams started brightly with Rolleston playing against the wind in the first half. The defence of Lee Johnson, Dom Hickman and Liam Oakley looked very composed in the opening half as Whittington pushed forward trying to take advantage of the howling wind.

Rolleston played the ball out wide on ten minutes were Conor Frankland ran at the Dragon's defender before unleashing a shot that sailed wide of the post.

Out on the left it was Dan Featherstone who linked well with Matt Webster and Ben Cuthbert to force the first corner of the game.

When Whittington flooded forward it fell to the impressive defending of Liam Oakley, Dom Hickman and the composed Lee Johnson to clear the threat and they managed this time and again.

Rolleston had chances to open the scoring from a Conor Frankland cross and again after Dan Featherstone won the ball after a fine tackle in the middle of the park but both chances went begging.

Dan Stringer linked well with Ben Cuthbert and Matt Webster to apply more pressure but the finishing wasn't good enough to break the deadlock.

Whittington took full advantage of the wind from free kicks and goal kicks but the very impressive Lee Johnson was leading by example cutting out the developing threat.

The ball was passed out wide left and it was Reece Atton this time that had some fine interplay with Ben Cuthbert resulting in another Rolleston corner.

With our regular 'keeper missing today it fell to Joe Wilson to play between the sticks and he looked very accomplished throughout the first half. His clearances from his hands were impressive against such a fierce wind.

When the referee blew for half time it was obvious that the players had worked their socks off to repel the Whittington onslaught and should be congratulated on their first half performance.

Half-time 0-0.

A change of 'keeper for the second half saw Ben Cuthbert volunteering and he was called upon almost immediately but he gathered the ball well and his clearance should have been converted for the opening goal but for some fine Dragon defending.

After ten minutes the first goal of the game arrived when Whittington benefited from some poor Rolleston play and the finish was a quality one with the 'keeper standing little chance.

Rolleston rallied and after a sustained period of pressure should have equalised but the Dragon's 'keeper pulled off a fine save and turned the ball around the post for a corner.

Conor Frankland drove the corner to the near post and when the ball was cleared it fell to Dan Featherstone who controlled it and then drove a fine effort goal wards but the ball was rising all the time and cleared the bar.

Rolleston applied more pressure with the aid of the conditions and from a Dan Wildman throw the ball was flicked on by Joe Wilson to Dan Stringer whose resulting shot was heading towards goal until the 'keeper pushed the ball around the post for another corner.

The second goal of the game arrived with ten minutes remaining when the Dragon's midfield passed their way down the right wing before the striker drove a low shot into the net.

Rolleston had no choice but to commit more players forward with only ten minutes remaining and after some fine Conor Frankland individual play the ball was rolled to Joe Wilson who aimed the shot for the top corner but the Dragon's 'keeper was equal to it.

It was Joe Wilson again who went on a jinking run taking on three Dragon defenders but the support wasn't there to assist him and when the Dragon's broke with speed the ball fell to the winger who drove in a low cross which was missed by almost everyone except the striker who, from only one yard out, couldn't miss.

With only seconds remaining the ball was played down the right starting with George Thompson. He passed to Reece Atton who linked well with Joe Wilson and Dan Stringer. The ball was driven along the edge of the area to Dan Wildman and his left foot low drive flew past the far post.

The referee blew for the last time and the Rolleston players knew that their second half display didn't match their first half energetic efforts and as a consequence were beaten.

Liam Oakley, Dom Hickman and Lee Johnson deserve praise for their defensive endeavours but overall chances were not taken and Rolleston were chasing the game for the last twenty minutes.

So the Rolleston Red Cup run comes to an end but the boys still have the League to fight for with only four games remaining. It is important to remember that winning the League will enable Rolleston Reds to compete against teams like this every week next season and that is something to look forward to!

Man of the Match : Lee Johnson - led by example showing fine defensive skills and read the play well.

05th January 2008

Winshill FC Green 0-3 Rolleston Red

The first game of the New Year and the bitter wind was howling for this 10:15 kick-off on pitch 7.

It was all Rolleston in the first ten minutes with the aid of the wind and it was Conor Frankland who ghosted past the Winshill defender to drive a low cross into the box for Joe Wilson whose resulting shot whistled just wide of the far post.

Joe Wilson found himself wide right and after receiving the ball and his quality cross fell to Conor Frankland who quickly drove the ball towards the goal but the busy Winshill 'keeper scooped the ball up.

The Rolleston defence of Dan Featherstone, George Thompson and Lee Johnson had very little to do in the first fifteen minutes whilst the midfield players pressed forward at every opportunity. It was from one of these attacks that Joe Wilson fed the ball to Conor Frankland wide right who skinned two players before delivering a fine cross that Ben Cuthbert got his foot to for a cool finish to open the scoring.

The ball was being played around by the Rolleston players and after eighteen minutes the ball fell to Dan Stringer who looked up before sliding the ball to Joe Wilson. He in turn rolled the ball to Conor Frankland who drove forward bypassing two defenders and his resulting cross was met by Ben Cuthbert who volleyed home his second goal of the game.

When the ball was played down the left, Reece Atton drove forward with support from George Thompson. Reece delivered a fine cross but the 'keeper held the ball well before clearing.

The third goal arrived after twenty-five minutes when Dan Featherstone fed the ball to Matt Webster whose low drive into the box was met by the on form Ben Cuthbert who slotted home for his hat trick.

Oliver Jones had his first touch of the ball shortly before the half-time whistle and his clearance fell to Dan Wildman on the left. He drove forward and passed the ball to Matt Webster. Joe Wilson demanded the ball and his fine effort was parried away for the fifth corner of the game.

The Rolleston midfield were totally dominating the game and flooded forward once more as Joe Wilson played the ball to Dan Wildman who took on the defender before delivering a fine pass to Matt Webster. He in turn played it to the advancing Joe Wilson and his low drive was saved well by the Winshill 'keeper.

Liam Oakley received the ball down the left and rolled it to Dan Wildman who skinned one player before winning a throw-in. He took the throw short to Joe Wilson and when Ben Cuthbert received the ball he smashed the ball towards goal only for a defender to bravely deflect the ball for another corner.

The Rolleston movement from the corner was improving and causing confusion in the Winshill defence especially when the ubiquitous Conor Frankland floated the ball into the area.

Half-time 0-3.

Even though Rolleston were against the bitter wind in the second half they were playing some fine flowing football and after a move that involved five players it was Dan Wildman who drove into the area before unleashing a left foot shot that whistled past the far post.

A great run from Reece Atton on the right resulted in a fine cross that Ben Cuthbert controlled well before playing in Conor Frankland. He in turn rolled the ball to Dan Featherstone who released a low drive that the 'keeper saved well.

Dom Hickman was delivering some fine goal kicks against the wind and it was from one of these clearances that Reece Atton received the ball. He drove at the defender and played in Dan Featherstone who pushed forward before delivering a fine pass to the advancing Dom Hickman. The pass from Dom Hickman found Dan Wildman on the left just inside the area and his left foot shot went wide.

Rolleston flooded forward in waves and from a Dan Featherstone cross on the right the ball fell to Liam Oakley who delivered a fine left footed shot that flew wide.

Out on the left Dan Wildman ran at the defender before distributing the ball to Ben Cuthbert who flicked it to Dan Featherstone as the defender approached. The shot from Dan Featherstone was deflected wide for yet another corner.

Rolleston kept the ball well and were stringing passes together but the Winshill 'keeper was on his best form throughout.

More fine linkup play on the left from Liam Oakley, Dan Wildman and Matt Webster resulted in a fine shot but again the 'keeper was there to sweep the ball up.

The Win shill 'keeper was clearing the ball well and with the aid of the wind the Rolleston defenders had to concentrate fully and it was Liam Oakley, Lee Johnson and Dom Hickman who ensured that Ollie Jones in goal had very little to do.

When Ollie Jones was called upon, as the ball was played over the top, he rushed out to clear well.

In the remaining minutes Dan Featherstone was pushed forward and had two chances to score but for some very brave 'keeping.

Rolleston totally dominated this game but a lot of credit should go to Winshill Green for competing well.

Scorer: Ben Cuthbert (3)

Man of the Match: Dan Wildman - kept the ball alive and drove forward out on the left at every opportunity.

01st December 2007

Whittington FC Lions 0-2 Rolleston Red

Once again the weather played a large part in this game with the combination of the winter wind and bright sunshine making it difficult for defenders and goalkeepers alike.

Rolleston decided to play against the bitter wind in the first half and from the kick-off Matt Webster linked well with Dan Wildman on the left with the defender clearing long with the aid of the wind.

Ollie Jones was always going to be busy in the first half and was switched on to the wind assisted clearances that were many from the Whittington keeper.

Once again on the left it was Matt Webster who linked with Dan Stringer for some fine interplay and when the play broke down it was Dan Wildman who put in a good blocking tackle.

On twenty minutes the manager rotated the squad and this paid off immediately as Lee Johnson played a fine pass to Conor Frankland down the right flank. He in turn rolled the ball to Joe Wilson whose shot whistled over the bar.

As Whittington flowed forward it was left to Joe Wilson to put in a couple of fine tackles to stop play developing.

When Whittington got through the Rolleston defence of Dom Hickman, Dan Featherstone and the accomplished Liam Oakley, it was the ever-alert Ollie Jones who swept the ball up.

Only on one occasion was the Rolleston keeper beaten but an excellent clearance from Dan Featherstone off the line ensured the score remained blank at half time.

The Reds should take full credit for keeping a clean sheet against such a fierce wind.

Half time 0-0.

Ben Cuthbert linked well with Conor Frankland at the start of the second half. He in turn played in Dan Stringer on the edge of the Whittington box. The impressive Joe Wilson demanded the ball and slid it under the body of the advancing keeper to open the scoring.

The following ten minutes of play was all Rolleston but time and again the midfield and attacking players drifted into an offside position, which aided the Whittington defence.

Once more Joe Wilson was in the thick of things in midfield pulling off more fine tackles and playing the ball down the right wing.

The Rolleston defence had little to do in the remaining fifteen minutes but when called upon it was Reece Atton and George Thompson who denied the Whittington right-winger any space.

Wave after wave of Rolleston attack followed but the Whittington keeper was in great form, especially from a superb long distance strike from Conor Frankland that was heading for the top corner.

Joe Wilson won the ball in midfield and played in Ben Cuthbert who looked up trying to chip the keeper but the effort was just wide.

Rolleston had six corners in quick succession but could not convert the chances as the keeper was on top form.

When Whittington broke with ten minutes remaining it was Liam Oakley who slid in to win the ball and looking up played it down the left wing to put Whittington under greater pressure.

Conor Frankland won the ball on the right and played a one-two with Dan Stringer but the resulting shot was again turned away for a corner.

On the right hand side it was Dan Featherstone who bravely won the ball and set off on a meandering run through the Lions midfield before unleashing a left footed shot that went wide.

With only seconds remaining Conor Frankland took on the Lions left back and played in Joe Wilson whose fierce shot was parried into the path of Matt Webster who calmly slotted home the second goal of the game.

This was a spirited game from Rolleston Reds and keeping a clean sheet whilst under sustained first half pressure set the platform for a fine second half display which at times overwhelmed Whittington.

Scorers:

  • Joe Wilson (1)
  • Matt Webster (1)

Man of the Match: Joe Wilson - A great midfield display, putting in great effort and some fine tackles culminating in a well-taken goal.

** CUP** Rolleston Red 3-1 Winshill FC Gold

A bitterly cold northerly wind blew for this cup game but the Rolleston fans were rewarded within twenty seconds of the start when Rolleston stole the ball from the Winshill kick off and great interplay between Joe Wilson, Reece Atton and Conor Frankland resulted in Joe Wilson slotting home the first goal - a great start!

Rolleston were comfortable in defence with Lee Johnson, Dom Hickman, Liam Oakley and Dan Featherstone showing some fine play to snuff out any Winshill attack.

After twenty-two minutes the Rolleston lead was doubled when Dan Stringer lobbed the ball through the Winshill defence for Conor Frankland to run on to and as the keeper advanced he calmly placed the ball past him and into the empty net.

Winshill were trying to disrupt the Rolleston team at every opportunity but the referee was on good form throughout. Rolleston created numerous chances and should have had a greater lead but at half time the score remained at two.

Half-time 2-0.

Winshill had the wind at their backs for the second half and the temperature seemed to drop as Winshill pushed forward and had two chances in the first five minutes but Ollie Jones was in fine form and pulled off great saves.

Liam Oakley played the ball out of defence and when it arrived at the feet off Ben Cuthbert he made no mistake to increase the lead to three with a comfortable finish.

Winshill continued to huff and puff and from a corner they struck the post and Liam Oakley cleared.

The wind was aiding Winshill as they broke through but as the attacker advanced on goal it was a fine save from the impressive Ollie Jones that kept their score sheet blank.

From fine build up play in midfield, Dan Featherstone played the ball to Matt Webster who looked up and played in Dan Wildman. His resulting shot flashed just wide of the post.

On the right it was Lee Johnson who linked well with Reece Atton and when the play broke down deep in the Winshill half it was the same two players who covered back showing great commitment to stop Winshill developing play.

Rolleston continued to push for more goals and Ben Cuthbert won another Rolleston corner but the delivery was cleared by the Winshill defence.

The manager continued his successful rotation policy with Joe Wilson, Dan Stringer and Conor Frankland joining the fray and competing with their increasingly physical opponents.

The Winshill goal arrived late in the game when the Winshill attacker finished well. This seemed to give Winshill a renewed hope and soon after had a fine twenty yard effort saved from Ollie Jones.

Dom Hickman was very impressive in defence throughout the game and pulled off tackles on more than one occasion to nullify Winshill.

The fans were happy when the referee blew for full time as Rolleston proved resilient and it gave the fans a chance to warm their hands in appreciation of the boys' performance as they march on to the next round of the Cup.

Scorers:

  • Joe Wilson (1)
  • Conor Frankland (1)
  • Ben Cuthbert (1)

Man of the Match: Dom Hickman - a fine defensive display, playing the ball along the ground at every opportunity.

Rolleston Red 4-0 Rolleston Black

The cold blast of the autumn wind blew across pitch seven for this return fixture after last weeks entertaining score draw.

It was the Black's that had the first opportunity of the game from long range but Ollie Jones swept the ball up with ease.

On the left wing it was Conor Frankland and Matt Webster who linked up well with the resulting shot skimming off the post.

The Rolleston Red defence of Dom Hickman, Liam O and the comfortable George Thompson were impressive in the opening ten minutes. From fine build up play starting in defence, the ball flowed down the left with Dom Hickman passing the ball to Dan Wildman who in turn played it into the path of Ben Cuthbert. He looked up and when Conor Frankland demanded the ball his shot whistled past the upright.

The first goal arrived after Liam Oakley played the ball along the floor to Dan Wildman who noticed Matt Webster's run and played him in behind the last defender. His low rasping shot was only parried into the path of Ben Cuthbert who drove the ball into the net.

The Reds applied more pressure on fifteen minutes after a long throw-in from Dan Wildman found the head of Dan Stringer. The ball was only half cleared and when Dom Hickman delivered a fine pass to Matt Webster on the left wing he swung a fine cross into the box which should have been converted but the 'keeper swept the ball up.

On twenty minutes the score was doubled when Dom Hickman won a fine tackle in midfield and fed the ball to Conor Frankland. Ben Cuthbert made a fine run and when Conor Frankland played him in he ran into the box on the right, looked up and spotted Matt Webster in front of goal who slotted home with the 'keeper stranded.

Reece Atton made an instant impact when his first touch of the ball flew fast and low but just missed the 'keepers right hand post.

Rolleston Red were adapting well to the conditions and when Dan Stringer won the ball in midfield he drove forward taking on two players before drilling the ball into the back of the net to increase the score to 3 - 0.

Shortly before half-time Dan Featherstone won the ball in defence and played in a fine pass to Reece Atton. He in turn played the ball to Joe Wilson who quickly knocked it to Dan Stringer. Joe Wilson continued his run towards goal and from a Dan Stringer pass had a fine shot saved by the 'keeper.

The Reds won the ball from the goal-kick with Dan Featherstone playing in Joe Wilson. Liam Oakley got in on the act with a fine pass to Dan Wildman. Matt Webster received the ball and crossed it to Ben Cuthbert but his shot was saved by the 'keeper.

Half-time 3-0.

From the Reds kick-off, Joe Wilson played in Dan Wildman. Matt Webster received the ball and ran at the defence. The defenders retreated which allowed Matt to fire off a fine effort which was smothered by the 'keeper.

Ollie Jones had very little to do in the second half mostly because of the fine defensive display from George Thompson, Dom Hickman, Lee Johnson, Liam Oakley and Dan Featherstone who interchanged when the manager rotated throughout.

When the Black's attack was broken up the ball was played on the floor from George Thompson to Dan Wildman in the Black's half. He rolled the ball inbetween two defenders for Matt Webster who drove forward and finished well with a fine side foot shot to increase the lead to 4-0.

Rolleston Black kept on battling but the Reds were too strong throughout with the ball being cleared time and again whenever there was a potential threat.

The Reds seventh corner of the game arrived after Joe Wilson played the ball to Conor Frankland on the right. His fine effort was turned around the post by the 'keeper.

The final whistle followed soon after and even though the wind and cold effected this game, it was played in the right spirit with both teams trying at all times to overcome the poor conditions.

Scorers:

  • Matt Webster (2)
  • Ben Cuthbert (1)
  • Dan Stringer (1)

Man of the Match: George Thompson - a fine defensive display, playing the ball on the ground at every opportunity.

Rolleston Black 1-1 Rolleston Red

The Autumnal sun shone brightly as both teams readied themselves for this local derby.

The tension could be felt from the first kick-off and in the first minute Rolleston Red flooded forward and from a fine Ben Cuthbert strike on the right the 'keeper got his hand to the ball which came off the post for the first corner of the game.

The Reds flowed forward again on four minutes when Reece Atton played a pass to Dan Stringer on the right but the 'keeper swept up the cross.

Dom Hickman won a free kick in midfield and it was Ben Cuthbert who got on the end of it only for the 'keeper to comfortably save the low effort.

The Blacks won their first corner after twelve minutes but the ball was cleared by Dan Featherstone to Dan Stringer. He played the ball to Ben Cuthbert whose quality run resulted with a fine effort on goal that flew wide.

On twenty minutes the impressive Dan Featherstone showed great commitment when he won the ball in midfield with a finely timed tackle. The ball flowed forward resulting in a corner. Matt Webster drilled the ball in to Ben Cuthbert whose strike crashed against the bar before being cleared.

The Rolleston Red defence of Lee Johnson, Dom Hickman and Dan Featherstone where mopping up any potential threat from the opposing forwards.

The Reds should have taken the lead after some fine build up play form Dan Wildman and Matt Webster on the left. The pass to Ben Cuthbert was a quality one but again the 'keeper read the play well and swept the ball up.

Liam Oakley was called upon to clear at the back from a fast Rolleston Black attack. His fine pass fell to Ban Cuthbert who put Matt Webster through on goal but the 'keeper closed down the angle and the shot went wide.

The Rolleston Black 'keeper was called upon again just before half-time when Dan Wildman fed Matt Webster but once more the 'keeper ensured the score remained blank as the referee blew his whistle for half-time.

Half-time 0-0.

Both teams started the second half brightly with the ball being moved around. Good build up play on the left from Dan Wildman and Matt Webster played in Joe Wilson who in turn passed the ball back to Dan Wildman but his left foot shot was off target.

More pressure from Rolleston Red resulted in a corner that Matt Webster floated in. Dan Stringer was first to react and his header flew over the bar.

Dan Featherstone was pushed up to the centre of midfield and he showed his presence immediately with a great tackle that dropped to Joe Wilson. He ran at goal but the 'keeper pulled off a fine save.

The 'keeper cleared the ball down the right and when the Rolleston Black winger played the ball across the box, the Red's defenders were guilty of ball watching and even though Ollie Jones got his hand to the initial shot, the rebound was slotted home to open the scoring for the Black's.

Rolleston Red were up and at the Black's immediately from the restart when George Thompson played the ball down the left wing to Joe Wilson. He looked up and played in Dan Wildman who in turn pushed the ball to Matt Webster who timed his run well. The 'keeper advanced to cut down the angle and the shot just flew wide.

More great build up play from Rolleston Red with Reece Atton playing the ball to Conor Frankland. He skinned the left back before playing in Joe Wilson. His fine cross fell to the feet of Matt Webster but the ball bobbled and the shot flew over the bar.

Rolleston Red pushed forward again and this time it was Joe Wilson who was through on goal but yet again the 'keeper pulled off a great save.

Dom Hickman won the ball in defence shortly afterwards and his pass dropped to Liam Oakley on the left. His fine cross fell to the feet of Conor Frankland but he snatched at the shot and it went wide.

From the goal kick it was Conor who won the ball and played it to Lee Johnson. He drove in a fine low cross but nobody anticipated the cross and the play was wasted.

Joe Wilson ran at the defence again from the clearance and once again the 'keeper pulled off a fine save.

Ollie Jones was having a quiet game but when he was called upon he kept his concentration and cleared the ball well.

The impressive Dan Featherstone won the ball in midfield with another finely timed tackle with the ball falling to Reece Atton who produced the pass of the game as he dissected the Black's defence. Matt Webster went through on goal and with only the 'keeper to beat he slotted the ball high into the roof of the net to equalise,

With only two minutes remaining it was Rolleston Black who broke quickly but Dom Hickman and Lee Johnson stopped the play from developing.

Rolleston Black flooded forward looking for the winner but it was Matt Webster who put in a tremendous tackle to halt the advance.

When the ref blew for full time supporters from both teams clapped and cheered as they appreciated this very entertaining game.

Let's hope that next weeks return fixture will be as entertaining as this encounter and Rolleston Reds convert their chances to take all three points.

Scorer: Matt Webster - 1

Man of the Match: Dan Featherstone - whether playing in defence or midfield he showed commitment in the tackle and intelligence when playing the ball.

** CUP ** Repton Casuals White 0 - 5 Rolleston Red

Rolleston have had fine Cup runs over the past two seasons and this year's campaign has started well.

Repton kicked off but Rolleston stole the ball straight away on the right and from a Dan Stringer cross, the defender misjudged the bounce of the ball for Matt Webster to slot past the stranded Repton 'keeper.

The Rolleston defence of Liam Oakley, Dan Featherstone and Dom Hickman were solid in the opening minutes and after Dom Hickman won the ball he played it to Dan Wildman on the left. He looked up and played the ball to Reece Atton who in turn rolled it to Ben Cuthbert. After taking on two defenders Ben placed the ball to the 'keepers right to double the lead.

Dom Hickman was immense at the back in the opening half and his distribution to the midfield is something all the players should learn from.

After another wave of Rolleston attacks the ball flowed through the midfield and when Joe Wilson played the ball to Ben Cuthbert he quickly stroked the ball into the net for his brace.

Repton played with lots of enthusiasm and Ollie Jones was called on to pull off a fine save after fifteen minutes.

Rolleston pushed forward again with Dan Featherstone who played the ball to Dan Wildman on the left. His cross ricocheted off players in the Repton box and after the defender handled the ball the ref had no option but to award a penalty.

Dom Hickman struck the ball well to the 'keepers left but he guessed right and scooped the ball around the post for the eighth Rolleston corner of the half.

The corner was driven in by Conor Frankland with Joe Wilson unleashing a half volley that hit the post.

Half-time 0 - 3.

Rolleston won a free kick at the start of the second half that Matt Webster floated into the Repton box. Joe Wilson headed the ball towards goal but the 'keeper got his hands to it and cleared quickly.

When Rolleston passed the ball around they looked comfortable and impressive but when the play broke down after the ball was won by the Repton midfield unnecessary pressure was then applied to the Rolleston defence and only the quick thinking of Ollie Jones ensured any Repton attack was cancelled out.

The fourth goal arrived with ten minutes remaining after sustained Rolleston pressure. The build up play was a pleasure to see after Liam Oakley stroked the ball to Dan Wildman. He in turn passed to Conor Frankland who immediately played in Matt Webster. Joe Wilson demanded the ball just outside the Repton area and when Matt played him in he struck the ball that fizzed towards the Repton goal but was deflected in. I'm sure Joe can claim the goal as it was destined for the top corner.

The Rolleston defence were called upon with five minutes to go after the play broke down. George Thompson won the ball and played it forward but the midfield player hung on to the ball for far too long and Repton broke forward again. This time it was the Captain Lee Johnson and the very impressive Dom Hickman who stopped the flow.

At times Rolleston looked lethargic and Repton took advantage of this as they pushed players forward. Ollie Jones kept the Repton score sheet blank when he raced out of his goal to clear.

The Rolleston passing game resulted in the final goal of the game after Dan Featherstone played an intelligent ball from right back into the midfield. Dom Hickman drove forward with the ball and played it to Conor Frankland. He passed the ball to Matt Webster who rolled it to Dan Stringer. Dan looked up and hit the ball with pace which flew into the Repton net.

Repton kept playing to the end and should be congratulated for their efforts but it is Rolleston Red who march on to the second round of the Cup.

Scorers:

  • Ben C (2)
  • Dan S (1)

Man of the Match: Dom Hickman - Fine defending and distribution throughout the game.

Rolleston Red 6 - 1 Newhall Lions

It was thermals and gloves all round as the frost had settled over night for this early start.

Even though Rolleston started slowly they went ahead after five minutes when the ball fell to Conor Frankland who slotted home from eight yards. This settled the Rolleston team who began to play the ball around but the slippery conditions were the main cause for mistakes throughout the first half.

Newhall came close but the impressive Ollie Jones pulled off a fine save.

On twenty minutes the score was doubled when a Matt Webster corner flew across the box and as Dan Stringer dummied it fell to Dan Wildman who drove the ball with his right foot into the bottom left hand corner.

The defence of Lee Johnson, George Thompson and the very composed Dom Hickman were in control for the remaining minutes of the first half and Ollie Jones ensured that the Newhall score sheet remained blank by staying alert and rushed off his line when Newhall played the ball over the top.

Dan Featherstone played the ball through to Reece Atton on twenty-five minutes, who in turn played it to Dan Wildman. Ben Cuthbert made a fine run and when Dan Wildman played the pass between two Newhall defenders Ben drove the ball low into the net.

From the restart Rolleston won the ball and Matt Webster was through on goal but the 'keeper narrowed the angle and the resulting shot was tipped past the far post. From the resulting corner the ball was only half cleared and Ben Cuthbert picked up his second goal of the game - and eighth of the season - with a fine finish from the edge of the box.
The Rolleston defence of Liam Oakley, Dan Feathersone and Dom Hickman ensured Rolleston of a clean sheet as the referee blew for half time.

Half time 4 - 0.

Newhall came out fighting at the start of the second half with three up front and this ensured Rolleston were under pressure for the next ten minutes. They should have scored on two occasions but for the save hands of Ollie Jones.

Dan Stringer eased the pressure when he took on two defenders and his resulting shot was saved well.

Another Rolleston attack flowed but this time it was Jo Wilson who was through on goal but once again the Newhall 'keeper narrowed the angle to make it difficult and saved the low drive.

Newhall were playing the offside well and time and again the Rolleston attackers were caught. This resulted in a number of Newhall freekicks that put Rolleston under a great deal of pressure. The Newhall goal came from this pressure when some poor marking left Ollie Jones isolated and the Newhall midfield player headed home.

The manager was rotating players throughout the second half and it was Jo Wilson who should have increased the lead but his fine shot was parried and the rebound hit the foot of the post.

Newhall had no choice but to push forward and they should have scored but for a couple of fine saves from the ever-alert Ollie Jones.

Rolleston rallied and from a fine Dan Featherstone pass, Dan Stringer ran through the defence and drove the ball hard and low beneath the advancing 'keeper to make it 5 - 1.

Newhall pushed forward but Liam Oakley and Ollie Jones stood firm in defence.

The final goal arrived from some good build up play after a fine George Thompson tackle. The ball flowed through midfield to Matt Webster who played the ball through to Dan Stringer. He drove forward and as the Newhall 'keeper advanced he slotted the ball low to the right.

Scorers:

  • Ben Cuthbert (2)
  • Dan Stringer (2)
  • Conor Frankland (1)
  • Dan Wildman (1)

Man of the Match: Ollie Jones - pulled off some fine saves and stayed alert throughout the game.

Mayfield Panthers FC Black 2 - 5 Rolleston Red

Before the leaves on a nearby tree fell to the ground on this Autumnal morning three goals had been scored in this top of the table clash.

It was Rolleston who struck first from a quality Conor F cross on the right and as the
